Lewis Hamilton ended up winning, with Max finishing second, leading to the latter running to push Ocon in the paddock after the race, for which he received punishment from the FIA.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen, fastest in the first session with a lap of 1:38.491, was second fastest in the evening and 0.044 slower than the Finn.

"I think emotions are a part of sports, I think they will always be", the German said in the press conference for the Abu Dhabi GP. "If you get hit like that, I honestly don't understand what I should do differently".

"I lost a victory, so I think from my side I was really calm".

Footage later emerged of the 21-year-old pushing Ocon at the weighing scales having exchanged furious words. I actually saw a few days ago in football again, so from my side I thought it was quite a calm response. It clearly pissed me off as straight away I was expecting an apology. Say thank you very much for being second instead of first.

Verstappen also dismissed comments from Hamilton, who said that Ocon was right to try to overtake. "But if you understand the whole conversation you will see it as a bit different". "Something I wasn't expecting to hear", he said.

"OK I got my two days [of public service] with the FIA, which we will find out what we are going to do".

"We hope to do the odd test with him".

At least 84 now dead in California's Camp Fire
In Northern California, searchers tried to keep their minds on the task rather than the tragic situation. Another person has been reported dead in California's Camp Fire, bringing the death toll to 84 people.

Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen, preparing for his last race with the team before joining Sauber, and season's runner-up Sebastian Vettel were seventh and eighth in session one and then fifth and sixth.

Ocon was stone-faced throughout but had his say.

"It's not a great thing, you know, to be involved with a crash with the leader", he said. Max Verstappen replied, "Listen, I mean, I just overtook Lewis". "It was his race to win".

"We're not robots, we have emotions and it will always be unless you put robots in the auto but I don't think we want that".

The pair have competed since their karting days.

"I will respond, if he can not, I will", Ocon said.

"We all started racing when we were small kids in go-karts and to be in an F1 auto is the dream we all had". I went for it, it was important for us to get close to the top ten pack if something happened - a penalty or anything, I could have got into the points.

Four-time world champion Vettel has had altercations in the past with Verstappen and former teammate Mark Webber. For the people reporting about the show it's their job.
