Philippines to protest if Chinese weather sta...

Philippine Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said the country will launch a formal diplomatic protest against China if reports of Chinese weather stations operating on man-made islands in disputed waters of the South China Sea turn out to be true.

A major Chinese news agency also reported that the stations include equipment for basic ground and atmospheric observation as well as weather radars, which can be used together for constant monitoring of meteorological indicators.

In a statement sent through Assistant Secretary Elmer Cato, the agency said it monitored news reports, quoting officials of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs that weather observation stations have been established on three features in the West Philippine Sea. We have not validated that.

The stations have been installed on Fiery Cross, Subi and Mischief reefs of the Spratly Islands, areas that are also being claimed by Vietnam.

China, in recent years, conducted land reclamation projects on several reefs in the resource-rich sea. "We'll have to leave it to the president's judgment on when and where the ideal time would be made".

Executive Director for the Center for Responsive Politics Sheila Krumholz commented: "The significance of this election is clear". Yet it may be effective in largely rural states where he remains popular and where numerous closest Senate races are playing out.

Panelo, however, downplayed the effect of Chinese activities in the disputed sea even after an worldwide tribunal ruled in favour of the Philippines in its case against China. He has six years within which to do it.

On Monday, Panelo said the Philippines would file a democratic protest against China once the report has been validated. "So as you said, we're still only coming in the half of his term".

Reacting to President Dutete's soft stance on China's increased military actions in the West Philippine Sea (WPS), Malacanang believes "it can never be too late" to bring up the ruling of the Permanent Court of Arbitration on the Philippine-China territorial dispute.

Asked if it is not too late, he said: "I do not think so because the arbitrational award will be there forever...."

Beijing has refused to recognize the ruling, insisting that it has "indisputable sovereignty" over 90 percent of the waters.
