Five men have been arrested on suspicion of a public order offence after a video posted online showed a model of London's Grenfell Tower being burned on a bonfire.

Five men aged 19 to 55 have been arrested after footage emerged online of people laughing and jeering as they burnt an effigy of Grenfell Tower.

Cheering can be heard when the effigy collapses.

"I am disgusted that people would behave in such a hateful way". A total of 71 people died in the fire at Grenfell Tower, so many people lost so many loved ones, and many more have been deeply affected.

As the video was circulating on Twitter, a number of people condemned the act.

The Met Police says it is not investigating the video.

A video of a burning cardboard model of Grenfell Tower, the West London apartment building where 72 people died a year ago, has drawn criticism, including from UK Prime Minister Theresa May, who called the act "utterly unacceptable".

"I can't imagine the distress this video will undoubtedly cause to bereaved families and survivors".

Earlier, Scotland Yard said its Grenfell Tower investigation team was "taking this matter very seriously". She said: "To disrespect those who lost their lives at Grenfell Tower, as well as their families and loved ones, is utterly unacceptable".

Speaking to LBC Radio, London Fire Commissioner Dany Cotton labelled the incident "appalling and disturbing".

Grenfell United, the official organisation for bereaved, survivors and community of Grenfell Tower, said: "It's a disgusting video".

At one point, one person said: "Didn't it start of the 10th floor?"

"It can not be justified on any level", she added.

One witness is heard to refer to the model as being in "really bad taste", something sarcastically agreed by another person off-camera, who appears to count seven others stood around watching.

The "disgusting and insensitive" video quickly went viral as people watched in shock.

London mayor Sadiq Khan said: "I utterly condemn this sickening video".

"They have been taken into custody", police said.

"The survivors of the Grenfell tragedy have acted with unbelievable dignity and deserve the utmost respect", Javid added.
