Real Madrid escaped from a largely uninspiring display with two late goals securing a fortuitous 2-0 win over Real Valladolid in Santiago Solari's first LaLiga match in charge.

The Spanish defender, 21, was precise with his passing, risky with his crossing and defensively solid, while 18-year-old Vinicius helped force the breakthrough with a wild shot that was deflected into his own net by Kiko Olivas.

Although Madrid walked out of the Bernabeu dugout with a different coach, with Santiago Solari making his league debut in charge of the first team, numerous issues faced by his predecessor remain.

The win lifted Real provisionally from ninth place up to sixth in the standings on 17 points, four behind leaders Barcelona who play at Rayo Vallecano later on Saturday.

Sergio Ramos was the centre of attention as Real Madrid beat Real Valladolid.

On stand in coach Santiago Solari, he said: "We are with the coach, whoever that is, until the end". We understand how the fans feel. "With more results we will get back the confidence of the fans in a team which has won a lot".

The way in which Gareth Bale ignored him as he walked off the pitch - substituted after an invisible showing - suggested that the Argentine might not have the requisite star status to lead a dressing room steeped in player-power.

Vinicius had excited fans in the Copa del Rey against Melilla in midweek and his flair and bursts of pace injected some verve into Solari's side.

The goal was harsh on Valladolid and sucked the life out of the visitors, whose defender Nacho gave away a clumsy penalty by falling into Benzema and Ramos cooly converted from the spot, transforming the earlier boos into relieved celebrations.

"I counted "one, two, three" and shot hard".

"You have moments of beauty when everything goes well and delicate times when you have to be organised, serious and show competitive spirit".
