President Donald Trump awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom - the nation's' highest civilian honor - to seven Americans Friday, including the "King" and the "Sultan of Swat", in a ceremony at the White House.

One of the longest-serving Republican senators in US history, Hatch is retiring in January after more than 40 years. Orrin Hatch of Utah, one of the longest-serving senators in U.S. history; Alan Page, who was elected to the Minnesota Supreme Court after an National Football League career with the Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Bears; and Roger Staubach, the Hall of Fame Dallas Cowboys quarterback.

Presidents have total discretion over whom they honor with a Presidential Medal of Freedom. Elvis left the building a little too soon, according to the president.

"Justice Page told me, 'When you take the elevator up, make sure to send the elevator back down, '" Creighton said. "I wanted to hear the rest of the song, I don't know why the cut it so short". She and her husband own the Las Vegas Review-Journal and Israel Hayom newspapers. The couple donated millions to Mr Trump's presidential campaign in 2016. Still, Adelson is not the first political supporter to be granted the award by a USA president.

It was Trump's first time to award the Medal of Freedom, which was established in 1945 by President Harry S. Truman.

Melania Trump looked patriotic in an eye-catching blue dress while attending the Medal of Freedom ceremony at the White House on Friday afternoon.

Also, honored posthumously was the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia who died in 2016. Scalia and Ginsburg were close personal friends. The president then said: "Wow".

Scalia's widow, Maureen, accepted the award on behalf of her husband. He also named all nine of their children.

Trump said Scalia transformed the American "legal landscape" and credited him with preserving the originalist view of the Constitution.
