Wayne Rooney's fairytale first season in Major League Soccer has ended in disappointment after the DC United striker missed a penalty during a shootout defeat to Columbus Crew in the knockout round of the play-offs.

Former United captain Rooney, who moved to DC United from Everton in June, is up for the MVP and Newcomer prizes after inspiring his side to a playoff spot.

While United finished 20 points adrift of the first place Red Bulls in the final regular season standings, there is little doubt that Rooney and his teammates are genuine contenders in the postseason.

Wayne Rooney missed a penalty in the shootout for DC United as Columbus Crew won their MLS Playoff match. "Because, really, we had no right to the make the playoffs".

"I don't like them", he added of shoot-outs.

Time to user out daylight saving time across most of America
Regardless of daylight saving time , we will continue to steadily losing daylight as we head towards the winter solstice. Americans will give it back by "springing forward" - and turning ahead their clock - one hour next March 10.

France's Frederic Brillant had given DC United the lead in the 21st minute after Steffen shunted an Acosta cross into his path in front of goal.

The clash went into extra time and Crew were on track for victory when Higuain headed in a Harrison Afful cross in the 96th minute. It did not take long for Columbus to draw level as ten minutes later, Federico Higuaín pounced on a loose ball inside the box and thumped the ball home from close range. Kreilach tied it at 2 in the 58th after a poor clearance fell to his feet and he volleyed it inside the post.

The conference semi-finals will be played over two legs between November 4-11.

The sixth-seeded Real Salt Lake overcame a 2-1 second-half deficit to advance to face top-seeded Sporting Kansas City in the next round.

RSL entered with just three road wins this season, and LAFC had only lost once at home.
