E3 is an outstanding opportunity for us to share new games and experiences with fans and business partners from across the globe.

However, patents, which are submitted months, sometimes years in advance, do give us a pretty in-depth understanding of work going on behind the scenes at these huge tech companies and especially their R&D departments.

In addition, PlayStation is expected to produce a new machine in the near future, the sort of announcement that usually occurs as a dedicated Sony-hosted event.

While this is unlikely to kill E3, Sony's decision to skip the event is a bigger issue for event organizers than Nintendo's I've years ago. Further, it was "exploring new and familiar ways to engage" its community, though at the moment, it had no details to divulge on how it plans on doing this.

"A lot to share with fans at E3 2019". Except in 2019, the increasingly fan-centric event will be without one of gaming's core names: Sony's PlayStation.

Sony also said it won't be having the usual presence on the show floor itself, meaning attendees won't be lining up to play its games in the usual way.

The Entertainment Software Association, the lobbyist group that runs E3, confirmed the news today in a press release. Developers close to Sony have reportedly told Kotaku that the PlayStation 5 is slated for a 2020 announcement/release, so a clean final year for Sony in 2019 makes some sense.

For the first time in 24 years, Sony and PlayStation will not appear at E3 in 2019. Jennifer Clark, senior vice president of communications at Sony, confirmed 'we will not activate or hold a press conference around E3'. Regardless, as 2018 nears its end, there's still plenty to keep players busy prior to E3 2019 such as the launch of the long-anticipated Kingdom Hearts 3 for both PlayStation 4 and Xbox. "We don't want to set expectations really high and then not deliver on it". With Sony confirming yesterday that the company won't be at E3 next year, it got some people thinking whether this has something to do with the impending PS5.
