Stan Lee, the beloved artist and storyteller who gave the world Spider-Man, Black Panther, the Hulk and countless more iconic comic book characters, has died, multiple outlets confirm.

No other information is available at this time.

Lee and Jack Kirby founded the company in 1961, beginning with The Fantastic Four and going on to create titles such as Spider-Man and The Incredible Hulk.

Lee helped Marvel Comics go mainstream in the 1960's by creating colorful heroes that could appeal to large audiences.

Lee had suffered several illnesses over the previous year or so - he had a bout of pneumonia and vision issues.

She said it was her grandmother's stories of the war that inspired her to join the forces. Attendees of the People's Procession were chosen by ballot.

During the 60s, Lee scripted most of Marvel's comics himself, including the Avengers and the X-Men.

Lee told The Associated Press in a 2006 interview: "I think everybody loves things that are bigger than life". Well, you get a little bit older and you're too old to read fairy tales. Three years later he settled the case for $10 million.

Some of Lee's creations became symbols of social change - the inner turmoil of Spider-Man represented 60s America, for example, while the Black Panther and The Savage She-Hulk mirrored the travails of minorities and women. Spider-Man did even better, taking in more than US$400m in 2002.

Lee and his wife, Joan, Wednesday in 1947 and raised two children in New York City.
