Analysts were sceptical on Saturday night that Tsai would be selected by her party to contest the next presidential election.

"The results indicate the public are strongly dissatisfied with the performance of Tsai and used their ballots to teach her a lesson", Wang Kung-yi, a political-science professor at Chinese Culture University in Taipei, told the South China Morning Post (SCMP) Saturday. For this, I feel sorry, and have offered my resignation to President Tsai Ing-wen to accept political responsibility.

However, Tsai later said she would ask Lai to stay on.

The resignation on Saturday came as the opposition Kuomintang (KMT) party, seen as being close to China, made gains by winning two of the island's most important city posts in mayoral elections.

Case No. 14: "Do you agree to the protection of same-sex marital rights with marriage as defined in the Civil Code?"

The top court ruled in favour of same-sex marriage, giving parliament two years to amend laws or pass new ones.

Although the government has clearly stated that the referendum results will not impact the court's original decision to legalize gay marriage, LGBT campaigners worry that their newly won rights will be weakened.

The complete referendum results are expected by 2.00 a.m. on November 25, as referendum responses will be counted after votes for political positions are completed.

Tsai and her Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) have faced a mounting backlash over domestic reforms as well as concerns about deteriorating relations with China, which still sees self-ruling Taiwan as part of its territory to be reunified.

He is a dark horse for the Heisman Trophy as he had thrown for 2,577 yards with 24 touchdowns and five interceptions this season. UCF has the nation's longest winning streak at 23 games and will host next week's American Athletic Conference championship game.

Some traditionally pro-DPP groups said before the election that they wanted to punish the party as their businesses had taken a hit from cross-strait tensions.

The KMT, which oversaw an unprecedented thaw with Beijing before Tsai took office in 2016, declared victory in 15 of 22 city and county seats, up from just six going into the election.

Wins in the southern city of Kaohsiung, which had been held by the DPP for 20 years, and Taichung were significant.

The Taipei mayoral seat is still to be announced.

Beijing has been ratcheting up pressure on the island it claims as its own territory by poaching its diplomatic partners and barring its representatives from global gatherings, while staging threatening military exercises and limiting the numbers of Chinese tourists visiting Taiwan.

She has called China's pressure "omnipresent", flagging up a recent row at the Golden Horse film awards in Taipei which saw a mainland actor referring to the island as "China, Taiwan" after a Taiwanese filmmaker had voiced her support for independence.

Ahead of the vote, Tsai and DPP officials repeatedly said they believed China has meddled in the lead-up to the elections through a "fake news" campaign, which Beijing has denied.

Some analysts said the defeat ruled Tsai out as a candidate for the presidency in 2020.

College student Kwan Chin-shun, 18, voting in Taipei, said she supported equal marriage rights.

The complex ballots also included a referendum on a bid to change the name under which Taiwan competes at global sports events that has already angered China.
