Two years ago, Sandra Parks' efforts earned her third place in her school district's Martin Luther King Jr. essay contest, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

"Sometimes, I sit back and have to escape from what I see and hear every day".

"In the city in which I live, I hear and see examples of chaos nearly every day".

Parks was watching TV in her bedroom on Monday when "several" bullets came flying toward her family's home, sister Tatiana Ingram said, according to WISN. "The bullet wasn't even for her".

Her mother Bernice Parks had been awoken by the sound of gunshots at around 7pm and quickly rushed to her daughter and found her bleeding.

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett mourned Parks, saying it reflected the "insanity" of gun violence.

13-year-old Sandra Parks died last Thursday night (November 15). "Tragically, her death was caused by someone who just decided they were going shoot bullets into her house and she's dead". On Wednesday, he was charged with first-degree reckless homicide with a risky weapon and other offenses, another television station, WISN, reported.

Vickie Brown-Gurley, who worked as the principal of Keefe Avenue School when Sandra was in fifth and sixth grade, remembered Sandra as a confident student with a "really good sense of humor". "Who we have become", she wrote in that essay, in part. "She was just so peaceful", her mother, Bernice Parks, told Fox6 Now.

Police said a 26-year-old man, Isaac Barnes, was arrested in connection with the girl's death. A world she told said had too much death.

"As a community, we must commit ourselves to taking whatever action is necessary to keep our children safe", the statement said.

"We must not allow the lies of violence, racism and prejudice to be our truth", she wrote. "My baby did not like violence", she said.

". the world that we have become now is like is all you hear about is somebody dying".

A photo of Sandra Parks is seen on a GoFundMe page set up by her family.

She also said she looked forward to doing big things in her life.

Barnes was charged with one count of first degree reckless homicide, use of a risky weapon, one count of endangering safety by use of a unsafe weapon (discharge firearm into vehicle or building) and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon.

Both him and Oden are still in custody and have not yet had a bond hearing. One of the perpetrators was found in a hiding in a closet after the incident, the other was located in a nearby home during a police sweep. Parks and the other winners were later featured during an interview on Wisconsin Public Radio in January 2017, according to the newspaper. A detective who later processed the scene recovered a pistol from a garbage can in the living room as well as a semi-automatic rifle from the bedroom.
