Delhi's air quality showed "significant" improvement as compared to Thursday when it went off the charts to the "severe plus emergency" category. According to the SAFAR, the moisture in the air on Wednesday was normal, thus reducing the pollution load slightly.

Air quality readings across different areas in the city. The Central Pollution Control Board's (CPCB) air quality forecast suggests that air quality will continue at "very poor" levels for the next three days across NCR. The 24-hour average Air Quality Index (AQI) at midnight stood at 423.

The period following Diwali a year ago saw hospitals inundatedwith people suffering the effects of air pollution.

Despite several restrictions and the two-hour window to burst only "green crackers" ordered by the Supreme Court, the national capital didn't appear to adhere to the 10 pm deadline and continued to light polluting firecrackers till late. This, they said was much higher than previous years.

According to SAFAR, on Thursday, the PM2.5 (particles in the air with a diameter of less than 2.5 micrometres) level was recorded more than eight times the permissible limit at 492 µgm-3.The PM10 (particles in the air with a diameter of less than 10 micrometres) level was recorded six times the permissible limit at 618 µgm-3.

In 2017, official data showed the PM10 level reached 595 µgm-3 and PM2.5 was 407 µgm-3. The government has said that the authorities are taking measures to curb the air pollution levels including banning trucks from entering the national capital till December.

The Supreme Court had allowed bursting of crackers from 8 pm to 10 pm on Diwali.

Delhi has failed spectacularly in preventing the air quality from falling into the "severe-plus emergency" category the morning after Diwali.

The court had asked the police to ensure that banned firecrackers were not sold and said in case of any violation, the station house officer (SHO) of the police station concerned would be held personally liable and it would amount to committing contempt of court.

But despite the court order, there were reports of violatiosn from many areas long after 10pm.
