THE Melbourne Cup has been marred by an apparent serious injury to star United Kingdom galloper The CliffsofMoher. Sadly there was nothing they could do for The Cliffsofmoher, but Moore is thought to be uninjured.

"The horse received immediate veterinary care, however it was unable to be saved due to the nature of the injury sustained".

O'Brien told racing media at Flemington that the entire team were saddened by the news.

"Unfortunately these things can happen to a horse galloping around the field at home", he said.

"It's very said. It could have been worse, Ryan [Moore] could have taken a fall off him, someone could have been seriously injured".

The National Transportation Safety Board said on Twitter that it is investigating the crash of a Bell 206B in Uvalde on Sunday. Their engagement photos show a giddy couple, with Will in a cowboy hat and Bailee showing off her ring.

There were some reports that The CliffsofMoher appeared distressed and sweaty prior to the jump. "He's really sweating up badly".

The Lloyd Williams-owned galloper peeled off heels to be in a striking position out wide at the top of the Flemington straight but just laboured home, finishing 11.75L off the victor.

After an eye-catching fourth at his Australian debut in the group one Caulfield Stakes and a third in the Caulfield Cup, the Lloyd Williams-owned stayer entered the Melbourne Cup a $17 chance. Red Cardinal was past the post last.

The race is held over a distance of 3200 metres, the traditional two-mile cup distance, for horses three years and older and is the richest and most prestigious two-mile handicap in the world.

He is the sixth horse to die in the Melbourne Cup since 2013 according to the RSPCA.

The 2014 favourite Admire Rakti collapsed of a suspected heart attack five minutes after the race finished and died in his stable while Arnaldo broke his right hind leg and was euthanised.
