Democrats seize US House in rebuke to Trump

Both President Donald Trump and Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi spoke Wednesday about their desire to work across the aisle on bipartisan policy initiatives in the new Congress.

Comparing how many of each party's women candidates won their seats, the Democratic women were more successful, particularly in the Senate and House races.

Libby noted that often the only way the Legislature was able to extract information from LePage's administration was to use the Government Oversight Committee's subpoena powers to compel witnesses to appear before them. But, he warned, he will respond in kind and government will suffer. Republican Sen. Dean Heller of Nevada, for example was defeated although he had embraced Trump, with both highlighting their desire to get more of the president's judicial nominees confirmed, a top priority for many social conservatives.

For Trump, the evening unfolded at a watch party in the White House residence, where the East Room and the State Dining Room were set up with large-screen TVs. He told yet another reporter he was "not a fan of yours, either". "And she lost. Too bad, sorry about that, Mia!"

Nina McLaughlin, a spokeswoman for the Maine Republican Party, said party officials were not immediately prepared to issue a statement on the election results.

The president criticized Republican candidates who apparently did not support him enough and lost congressional seats in Tuesday's elections.

Among those Trump took aim at was Rep. Mia Love, R-Utah, who, Trump said, asked him for help with what he called a "hostage" situation in Venezuela involving a Utah resident, but when it came to the election, "Mia Love gave me no love".

Trump says his vigorous campaigning stopped a so-called "blue wave", "if there ever was such a thing".

The Democrats could also more effectively block his legislative plans, notably his signature promise to build a wall along the border with Mexico.

Trump said he wasn't sure whether he should be happy or sad about their defeats. He has yet to come up with a derogatory nickname for her, as he has with many of his other Democratic foes, although that could certainly change. Progressives will nearly certainly clamour for Trump's impeachment - a push that Democratic leaders have indicated that they will resist, at least until Mueller releases his findings.

Trump said he is "looking at different people for different positions", adding that "it is very common after the midterms".

Mr Trump then sacked Jeff Sessions, the attorney-general, after months of sniping at him, as he began to reshape his cabinet for the second half of his administration.

Trump has always been frustrated with Sessions over his recusal from the Russian Federation investigation. At the same time, there could be regular reports about what the committee staff has found in subpoenaed records - perhaps Trump's tax returns, his company's internal financial documents, the records of his various oligarch partners in the former Soviet Union, and e-mails and other digital messages between Trump's team and people in Russian Federation.

"Maybe we will make a deal, maybe we won't".

"We took a thumping in the rural areas and I understand that", Heitkamp said.

He also announced that he that Vice President Mike Pence would be his running mate again in the 2020 elections.

"The expectation is that we will behave as a real branch of government and not just a supplicant to Trump, which this current Congress has been for the last two years", said Representative Raúl Grijalva, Democrat of Arizona.

Pence acknowledged that he would. "I just want to keep everything moving, because I´m loving it".
