Democrats rode a wave of dissatisfaction with President Donald Trump to win control of the U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday, Fox News and NBC News projected, giving Democrats the opportunity to block Trump's agenda and open his administration to intense scrutiny.

Trump encouraged voters to view the first nationwide election of his presidency as a referendum on his leadership, pointing proudly to the surging economy at recent rallies.

These three additional Senate seats, assuming no shenanigans in the Florida recount, would give Mr. Trump's party a 54-46 majority in the next Congress, with no worries about having to water down conservative legislation to placate moderate Republican Sens.

Republicans found comfort in a series of Senate gains. The U.S. does not hold one big race between a generic Democrat and a generic Republican to determine which party should control each chamber. Others have pledged to pursue impeachment, although removal from office is unlikely so long as the GOP controls the Senate or even maintains a healthy minority.

Midterm elections are typically hard for the party in power, but the GOP's hold on power was further weakened by an unusually large number of retirements as well as infighting between conservatives and centrists over their allegiance to Trump.

Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez of New Jersey faced a federal corruption trial in 2017.

Speaking at a wide-ranging White House press conference, Trump, by turns combative and conciliatory, said Democrats and Republicans should set aside partisanship to work together.

In Florida, six House seats are in play, and there are close and crucial battles for a Senate seat and the governorship. "Two can play that game!" the president wrote on Twitter on November 7.

The inquiry could potentially tie to a broader investigation into any connection between Mr Trump's presidential campaign and Russian involvement in the 2016 election - a charge the President has repeatedly and vehemently denied.

UN says earth's ozone layer is healing
Paul Newman, chief Earth scientist at Nasa's Goddard Space Flight Center, described the discovery as " really good news ". This year, the ozone hole over the South Pole peaked at almost 9.6 million square miles (24.8 million square kilometers).

"You shouldn't be working for CNN", he said. That could help Democrats because younger voters tend to lean their way. "These midterms are historically tough for a White House", said Republican strategist Scott Reed. He was active on Twitter throughout much of the day, blasting out endorsements for Republican candidates and weighing in on the balloting.

For example, Cummings and other Democratic lawmakers past year filed a federal lawsuit demanding disclosures of records to determine how Trump was approved by the General Services Administration to maintain the lease of the Trump International Hotel in Washington after he became president.

The guest list included major donors Sheldon Adelson, Harold Hamm and Stephen Schwartzman, Cabinet members like Steven Mnuchin of Treasury and Kirstjen Nielsen of Homeland Security, evangelical leader Jerry Falwell, top aides like Conway, his wife, Melania and children Ivanka, Eric and Donald Trump Jr., Ivanka's husband, Jared Kushner, and Vice President Mike Pence.

Democrats won ... seats in elections to the 435-strong House of Representatives, whose members are proportional to the population of states, reflecting the will and sentiment of the people in numerical terms. John McCain, nominally a Republican, for contributing to the GOP's losing the House.

Perhaps with this in mind, Trump tweeted: "In all fairness, Nancy Pelosi deserves to be chosen Speaker of the House by the Democrats".

"This isn't just the year of the woman, this is the year of every woman", said Cecile Richards, who served as the president of Planned Parenthood for more than a decade, noting the groundbreaking diversity among the women who have run for office this year. "Do not let their scare tactics frighten you away from the polls". Like other Democrats across the country, Spanberger emphasized protecting people with pre-existing conditions from being denied coverage or charged more by insurers.

Overall, women voted considerably more in favor of congressional Democratic candidates - with fewer than 4 in 10 voting for Republicans, according to VoteCast, a nationwide survey of more than 115,000 voters and about 20,000 nonvoters - conducted for The Associated Press by NORC at the University of Chicago.

Trump and Republicans appeared to have the economy on their side heading into the election: Unemployment in October held at a 48-year low of 3.7 percent.

Republicans who have controlled both houses of Congress since the Republican Trump assumed power in early 2017 have largely given him a pass, declining to hold hearings that might reflect badly on him or the officials he has appointed.
