The jet's pilots were "conducting routine operations" when they had to take drastic action, the U.S. Navy said in a statement.

The F/A-18 Hornet was conducting routine operations when it "experienced a mechanical issue" that forced the two crew to eject, the United States 7th Fleet said.

The pilots were in good condition and the crash is being investigated.

The crew members were "immediately and safely recovered", the US Navy 7th Fleet said in a statement.

CVW 5 is embarked onboard the USS Ronald Reagan and is now underway in the US 7th Fleet area of operations in support of security and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.

The aircraft carrier participated in a joint exercise known as "Keen Sword" with Japan and Canada from October 29 to November 8 in waters around Japan and near Guam in the Pacific.

The F/A-18 Block III Super Hornet is the newest highly capable, affordable and available tactical aircraft in U.S. Navy inventory.

The F/A-18 "is embarked onboard Ronald Reagan and is now underway in the US 7th Fleet area of operations in support of security and stability in the Indo-Pacific region", the Navy said. It also has a 20-mm M61 Vulcan cannon.
