Wayne Rooney hopes he will be the first of many England players to be honoured with an worldwide send-off and believes Harry Kane could one-day sign off with his goal-scoring record.

It was perhaps a timely reminder to some critics who believe Rooney should not be handed a final England appearance simply for old time's sake, and that he should earn the right to play again at Wembley.

England manager Gareth Southgate said last week he was yet to decide when in the second half Rooney will come on, but added it would be before fans start "heading for the tube".

"Obviously it's a huge honour for the FA to grant me this game".

The Manchester United and England all-time top goalscorer last appeared for his country in September 2016 during a 3-0 win over Scotland.

Rooney himself burst onto the global scene as an 18-year-old at Euro 2004, but admitted he didn't always enjoy his England career as he should have after that tournament given the burden of expectation to perform he shouldered.

"Everyone's entitled to their opinion".

"We haven't done anything like this before but I hope in 10 or 15 years' time we are sat here for someone like Harry Kane who could go on and get the goalscoring record", Rooney said.

Georgia Football Schedules Future Games With Clemson and Texas
Georgia has already announced it will open the 2024 season by playing Clemson in Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Georgia also has scheduled season-opening games in Atlanta against Virginia in 2020 and OR in 2022.

Rooney also revealed that he spoke to England manager Southgate about playing in a farewell match before the World Cup but they decided it wasn't the right time with the potential to disrupt preparations. "You play your best football and best performances when you're enjoying playing and winning". "We both felt it was right now though".

Rooney's return has already made an impact at the Wembley ticket office, with more than 20,000 tickets sold since his appearance was confirmed earlier this month.

After a season back at Everton, he moved to the United States to join D.C. United, helping them to the MLS playoffs in his first campaign.

Yet due to England not taking this friendly with the USMNT that seriously - they play Croatia in a crucial UEFA Nations League game on Sunday - this opportunity for Rooney to say farewell has presented itself.

While the former Everton and Manchester United striker brings down the curtain on his England career, Southgate has the chance to test some of those at the end other end of their global career against the States.

Now he wants to make use of the time he has with Rooney to learn from someone he has looked up to.

"It'd be nice, but the main thing is to run out at Wembley one last time and have the opportunity to thank the fans for the years they've supported me".
