Wild winds cause major delays at Aussie air hub

Airlines are warning passengers to check their flight status before heading to the airport and to anticipate delays across the morning.

Sydney Airport is using only one runway due to gusty wind of up to 55km/h that's causing delays for domestic and global flights in and out of the city.

The flight delays are on top of an existing headache for the airport after up to 30 arriving flights and 12 departures were cancelled at the domestic terminal on Thursday evening.

One passenger tweeted a photo of massive at Sydney airport, adding: "It's mental".

The Australian Bureau of Meteorology said winds would ease by November 23 evening, offering some respite to travelers and fire fighters.

A Sydney Airport spokesman said the delays at the Domestic and global terminals varied in length, and were affecting both arrivals and departures.

"This may also affect flights arriving and departing into other destinations across the network".

"Virgin Australia is working hard to minimise delays for passengers, and get everyone on their way as quickly and safely as possible".

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe weather warning for damaging winds over the state's southeast today - stretching from the Victorian border up to the Hunter region.

Qantas scheduled additional flights on Saturday from Sydney to Melbourne and Brisbane to help recover from Friday's delays.

The strong westerly winds have kicked up huge dust clouds from the parched hinterland of New South Wales.

Sydney Airport cancelled 76 flights after all but one of its three runways was closed due to the wind.
