The last minute cancellation prompted widespread criticism on social media and from some officials in Britain and the United States that Trump had "dishonored" US servicemen.

Trump had been scheduled to lay a wreath and observe a moment of silence at the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery and Memorial, located adjacent to Belleau Wood and about 100 kilometres northeast of Paris.

Trump's Chief of Staff John Kelly and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Joseph Dunford attended the ceremony, which was not interrupted by weather in the end.

In a story November 10 about President Donald Trump cancelling a planned visit to a cemetery for Americans killed in World War I, The Associated Press reported that the Secret Service determines when it's safe to fly Marine One, the president's helicopter.

Trump was criticized for not going to the cemetery by former White House officials David Frum and Ben Rhodes as well as Nicholas Soames, a grandson of former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Similar concerns prevented Trump from reaching the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea a year ago when foggy weather prevented his helicopter from landing.

Obama wasn't the only one featured in the rain in Twitter messages attacking the president. There is always a rain option.

He and his wife Melania had been scheduled to fly to the site of a 1918 battle that US Marines led against German forces after talks with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron.

Many also took to Twitter to point out that other prior presidents, including Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush all braved the rain to make appearances at Veterans events.

Trump said he was honored to be a part of the "very beautiful" ceremony in Paris that commemorated the end of World War I.

They included a memorial next to the Arc de Triomphe, where Mr Trump was photographed grinning enthusiastically as Russian president Vladimir Putin greeted him with a thumbs up and firm handshake. During that time he sent a tweet wishing a "Happy 243rd Birthday" to the U.S. Marine Corps.
