Xbox Acquires Wasteland, Bard's Tale Studio InXile Entertainment

Today at X018, Microsoft announced its intent to acquire Obsidian Entertainment and inXile Entertainment.

Obsidian Entertainment was founded in 2003 and since then, has released some pretty spectacular RPG's such as South Park: The Stick of Truth, Fallout: New Vegas, and Pillars of Eternity. Living up to BioWare's original title was no easy feat, but KOTOR II was also met with favorable reviews upon its release for Xbox in 2004.

As of late, Microsoft has been on a bit of a game studio acquisition spree.

Sears to close Grand Island location
Fewer than 90,000 people still worked for Sears Holdings earlier this year, down from 350,000 in decades past. Officials at La Cumbre Plaza could not immediately be reached for comment about the closure.

Some of the most likely reasons for Microsoft picking up both of these studios is to add more titles to Xbox Game Pass and continue to support services similar to that in the future.

InXile Entertainment is now working on Wasteland 3, and recently launched The Bard's Tale IV dungeon crawler on PC. The team at inXile has earned a distinguished reputation for creating deep, engaging role-playing games. They are also now developing Wasteland 3, which is expected to release in 2019. InXile's Brian Fargo said joining Microsoft allows the studio to tap into the "incredible Microsoft ecosystems that is second to none". Perhaps they'll lose their identity and what makes them so special. Both InXile and Obsidian have been turning to Kickstarter and crowdfunding in recent times to get their projects off the ground, so Microsoft will be giving them the financial backing to really realise their visions. The studio will continue to operate autonomously and bring its unique talents, IP and expertise to Microsoft Studios as they build new RPG experiences for our players and fans.
