Deb Haaland: First Native American woman elected to Congress

Halland will fill the seat that will be vacated by the state's newly elected governor, Democrat Michelle Lujan Grisham.

In an interview with ABC news in June, Haaland said, "In 230 years, there's never been a Native American woman in Congress". The progressive challenger and member of the Democratic socialist party unseated a powerful 10-term NY congressman, running with a campaign ad that said: "Women like me aren't supposed to run for office".

The Democrat was the first black woman to serve on Boston's city council and later made history again after defeating the 10-term incumbent Michael Capuano in the primary.

Representing Minnesota, she will be the first Congress member to wear a hijab or head scarf.

After Davids was declared the victor Tuesday, Yoder said he loved serving in Congress and appreciated the opportunity to serve the people of Kansas.

"Tonight New Mexico, you're sending one of the very first Native American women to Congress", Haaland said in her victory speech.

Her congressional platform has included the cancellation of student debt, banning private prisons and aggressive funding cuts to military spending. Polis, who declared victory late Tuesday night, has always been outspoken in favour of marijuana legalisation.

Kate Brown, who is bisexual, became the first openly LGBT person elected governor in 2016 when she won her OR race. Former New Jersey Gov. Jim McGreevey came out as gay only after announcing he would resign in 2004. Sharice Davids and Deb Haaland, both Democrats, won House races Tuesday and will become the first Native American congresswomen, CNN reports. Davids, a member of Ho-Chunk nation, worked for five years on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota before earning a White House fellowship in 2016.
