Mugabe, 94, is expected back in Zimbabwe at the end of the month.

Up to that point, Mr Mugabe was the only president Zimbabwe had known, having been in power for 37 years.

Zimbabwe's ex-leader Robert Mugabe is in Singapore for medical care and now unable to walk because of ill health and old age, President Emmerson Mnangagwa said on Saturday.

He led the movement for Zimbabwean independence from white minority rule. He did not give further details about Mr Mugabe's condition.

The current President, Emmerson Mnangagwa, made the announcement, but did not reveal the nature of Mr Mugabe's treatment.

Mnangagwa told ruling Zanu-PF supporters at a rally in Murombedzi, Mugabe's village some 100 km west of the capital Harare, his predecessor had been due to return on 15 October but that his poor health had delayed the journey.

Mr Mugabe was the world's oldest head of state before his dramatic exit.

When the army rolled its tanks into Harare, military leaders said they were targeting "criminals around the president".

"We are looking after him".

The rally is the first of a series meant to thank voters for backing him and the ruling Zanu PF party in the bitterly disputed July 30 elections.

Zimbabwe's former president Robert Mugabe gestures during a news conference at his private residence nicknamed "Blue Roof" in Harare, Zimbabwe, July 29, 2018.

He reiterated his respect for his mentor, making it clear that Mugabe was the undisputed founding father of independent Zimbabwe.
