$400K returned to GoFundMe donors after scam; 3 charged

GoFundMe said it has made refunds to everyone who contributed to a campaign involving Johnny Bobbitt left Katelyn Mc Clure and Mark D'Amico

GoFundMe said it has made refunds to everyone who contributed to a campaign involving Johnny Bobbitt left Katelyn Mc Clure and Mark D'Amico

"GoFundMe always fully protects donors, which is why we have a comprehensive refund policy in place".

"Rather, D'Amico, McClure and Bobbitt conspired to pass off a fake feel-good story that would compel donors to contribute to their cause".

GoFundMe spokesman Bobby Whithorne said Tuesday those who donated to the fund to help Johnny Bobbitt that was created by Katelyn McClure and her then-boyfriend Mark D'Amico received their money back.

Burlington County Prosecutor Scott Coffina said on November 15 that that within hours of the GoFundMe campaign launch, Kate McClure texted a friend saying that the majority of the story was fabricated, according to NBC 10 Philadelphia.

The proceeds of the campaign netted about $367,000 thousand, all deposited into McClure's accounts.

Investigators say the McClure, D'Amico and Bobbitt intentionally chose not to disclose information to their donors "that would affect their judgment about solicited contribution to that fundraising effort". It also claimed the couple bought an expensive auto and took a vacation, which Bobbitt speculated they used the money they raised to pay for.

"She did not run out of gas on the I-95 off-ramp, and he did not spend his last $20 to help her", said Coffina.

The three allegedly met more than a month before the launch of the campaign, authorities believe.

GoFundMe said all the money - $400,000 - has been returned.

"Less than an hour after the GoFundMe campaign went live, McClure, in a text exchange with a friend, stated that the story about Bobbitt assisting her was 'completely made up.'" Burlington County Prosecutor Scott Coffina said in a statement in announcing the charges for all three.

In other texts, the couple discussed their inability to pay bills and their mounting debts.

"It's important to understand that misuse is very rare on our platform", Whithorne said. He said the organization is cooperating fully with law enforcement.

GoFundMe has refunded donors of a fundraising scam that raised more than $400,000. "Campaigns with misuse make up less than one tenth of one percent of all campaigns". We have a zero tolerance policy for fraudulent behavior. It also guarantees a refund for donors in case "something isn't right" with a campaign, the site says.
