Bush gestures while talking to Attorney General William Barr in the Oval Office of the White House

President Donald Trump is considering William Barr, who served as US Attorney General for former President George H.W. Bush, to replace Jeff Sessions at the Department of Justice.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, said she was unfamiliar with Barr's views but encouraged by a suggestion that he was an "establishment" Republican. Whitaker, who has not been confirmed by the Senate, drew headlines for his prior criticism of the special counsel investigation into potential collusion between the Trump campaign and Moscow.

Under Bush 41, Barr was a hardliner on crime, advocating for expanding state and federal prison systems.

He's also written that Trump was right to fire Comey as well as former Acting Attorney General Sally Yates.

After leaving the Justice Department, Barr served as the general counsel and executive vice president of Verizon Communications but retired from the role in 2008. And if they argue that Barr will be Trump's stooge, they better have more evidence than the two statements discussed above.

Be sure to read Allahpundit's analysis on Barr from yesterday, when the Washington Post profiled him as the man most likely to succeed Sessions.

Currently, Mr Barr is counsel at the Kirkland & Ellis law firm in Washington DC. In remarks to the New York Times, Barr addressed the notion of the Justice Department investigating Trump's 2016 opponent, Hillary Clinton.

"To the extent it is not pursuing these matters, the department is abdicating its responsibility", Barr said.

Trump's consideration of a new attorney general comes during a critical time for special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation, of which the next Justice Department chief will inherit oversight. "(Barr) may be the kind of person who would be easier to confirm".

"He thinks that Mueller has too many Democrats on his team", Williams said, noting that Republicans like Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein and some members of the Senate do not share that concern.

"He was my first choice since day one", Trump said.

One of the people who spoke to the AP said there have been discussions among senior administration officials about Barr's willingness to do the job, and said the belief was that he was open to doing it if asked.

Barr has also said it was "understandable" why Trump fired former FBI Director James Comey and insisted his removal "simply has no relevance to the integrity of the Russian investigation as it moves ahead".
