Millions of users of Amazon's Echo speakers have grown accustomed to the soothing strains of Alexa, the human-sounding virtual assistant that can tell them the weather, order takeout and handle other basic tasks in response to a voice command. The man who received the files was attempting to access his own recordings at the time.

If you live in the United Kingdom and got someone a new Amazon Echo speaker, that might not have been the best idea. Amazon emailed the user a download link which contained the stranger's audio files, but they later removed the files from the link.

"This unfortunate case was the result of a human error and an isolated single case", an Amazon spokesman told Reuters.

The unidentified customer who heard Alexa make the command previous year told Reuters they described the incident as a "whole new level of creepy" in a scathing review on Amazon's website. You can also delete individual recordings associated with your Echo activity using the mobile Alexa app.
