Australia v India: Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli cause Australia problems

Jasprit Bumrah picked up a six-for to help India bowl Australia out for 151 in the first innings of the MCG Test

Jasprit Bumrah picked up a six-for to help India bowl Australia out for 151 in the first innings of the MCG Test

Jasprit Bumrah struck thrice, Ravindra Jadeja twice while Ishant and Shami got one each to leave Australia on 145/7 by Tea, still trailing by 298.

Shaun Marsh showed a lot of discipline and nearly saw through the session but was flummoxed by a superb slower one by Bumrah off the last ball before lunch to be dismissed LBW for 19, leaving Australia in despair.

Bumrah was superb throughout, breaking the game open with two quick wickets either side of the lunch break - dismissing Shaun Marsh with the last ball of the first session as he deceived the experienced West Australian with a slower full toss that wrapped him on the pad plumb in front, before removing Travis Head for 20 with a sizzling yorker soon after play resumed.

Australia's best partnership of the innings, lasting 17.3 overs between Pat Cummins and Tim Paine followed. To India's credit, the bowlers never let go the pressure and executed their plans to near perfection.

Pant, dropped on 15 by Cummins in the deep during the 159th over, scored 39.

Just when it appeared that Australia might avoid another dismissal, Mohammed Shami (1/27) came into the attack and went through the defence of Starc to hand India the advantage again.

However, one tweet from famous Indian actor Siddharth after Kohli decided not to send the Australians back in indicates fans back on the subcontinent wanted blood, with his disappointment at the captain's decision quickly retweeted over 100 times and liked by close to 4000 people.

Australia finished 0-8 in response.

Trying to break the shackles and dominate the opposition bowlers, Australian openers adopted an attacking approach which worked in India's favour. The fielder was stationed there for any aerial shot and the plan worked perfectly. The left-arm spinner exploited the rough outside the left-hander's off-stump and it became increasingly hard for the batsmen to survive.

Usman Khawaja (21) fell to this ploy, caught at short leg, as Australia slipped further to 53 for 3 in the 20th over.

Bumrah also surpassed Dileep Doshi to take the top spot in the list of most wickets taken by an Indian bowler in his debut calendar year. They used good footwork against Jadeja to smother the possibility of turn from the rough.

Bumrah trapped Shaun Marsh lbw with a textbook slower ball to end Friday's morning session then made a mess of Head's stumps.
