Stefaniak last spoke with her family on the night of November 27. "The family is just trying to process this hard time".

Villa Le Mas's attorney, Federico Jenkins, said the owners are cooperating with the authorities in the investigation.

The body of a woman found behind a Costa Rica Airbnb has been identified as a missing American tourist and a security guard at the rental where the woman was staying has been detained in her death.

"'I'm just gonna go ask the guards to buy me a bottle of water.' He says that her phone died, and that's it", Burton recalled, adding: "That's the last we heard from her".

Late Tuesday night, Stefaniak's father was allowed to enter the morgue and view the body, the announcement posted to the "Finding Carla" Facebook page said.

"Words can not express the devastation within her family and friends", the post said.

"Everything she did she always shared with friends and that's when we knew definitely something was up as soon as we lost contact with her", Demirel said.

On Wednesday, her family worked to bring her body home so they could make funeral arrangements. We will always be with her and we know she will always be with us.

"May God bless her soul". "This guy shook our hands, looked us in the eye and told us his story", Stefaniak's brother, Carlos Caicedo, said.

Authorities also had found stains inside the apartment where Stefaniak was staying, "which are compatible with blood and which will be submitted to further investigation and comparison", he said.

Local 10 News reporter Trent Kelly spoke to Stefaniak's co-workers Tuesday at the insurance office in Dania Beach where she works. Pictured above is the AirBnb rental where she was staying.

The Tampa Bay Times reports an autopsy found stab wounds on her arms and neck, and the cause of death was determined to be a blow to the head.

Police said they haven't been able to find some of Stefaniak's belongings, including her luggage.

That same day, investigators arrested 32-year-old Bismarck Espinoza Martinez, a security guard at the villa where Stefaniak was staying, according to CBS News.

The Facebook page, set up to search for the missing tourist who was believed to have been kidnapped, also revealed it would not stop posting and following up on the story, which has garnered worldwide attention.

The guard contradicted himself in statements to police.

After her sister-in-law left, an Uber driver took her on a tour of San Jose, then dropped her off at the Airbnb around 5 p.m. on November 27. Officials say that Martínez had the time and space to commit this crime and became a suspect because of the investigation.

Stefaniak had travelled to Costa Rica to celebrate her 36th birthday, relatives said.

The 36-year-old had been on holiday in Costa Rica with her sister-in-law April Burton, who had to leave a day early due to an obligation back home. She said it was raining and the power was going out. When she never exited her scheduled flight Wednesday, her family began worrying. It featured her in a turquoise bathing suit, lying near a pool with tropical plants in the background.
