A suicide auto bomber attacked a police headquarters in the southeastern Iranian port city of Chabahar on Thursday, killing at least three people and wounding several others, state TV reported.

Television also reported shooting in the area, located in the region of Sistan-Baluchestan, which is home to a Sunni Muslim minority in the largely Shi'ite country and has always been plagued by violence from both drug smugglers and separatists.

Reports say at least 19 people were also hurt, but Al Jazeera could not immediately verify the number of injuries.

The governor of Sistan-and-Baluchestan Province, Rahmdel Bamari, told the IRNA news agency that four people had been killed and many others injured. There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

Videos posted on Twitter, purportedly from Chabahar, showed thick smoke rising from the area.

While rare, Iran has been targeted by armed groups in recent years.

Chabahar, on Iran's south-eastern coast near the border with Pakistan, is home to a recently built port and is an "economic free zone".

Sistan-Baluchistan province, where the bombing hit, has always been a flashpoint, with Pakistan-based Baluchi separatists and jihadists carrying out cross-border attacks.

State authorities did not identify who was behind the attack.
