Brexit Secretary: Crunch commons vote to go ahead amid criticism and protests

Theresa May warned Tories that Jeremy Corbyn could end up in Downing Street if her Brexit deal is defeated

Theresa May warned Tories that Jeremy Corbyn could end up in Downing Street if her Brexit deal is defeated

Mrs May is due to attend the EU Council in the Belgian capital on Thursday, but aides have warned her that if she goes early without putting the deal to MPs, the EU will not take her seriously.

If the parliament approves the Brexit bill on Tuesday's vote, that would pave the way for Britain to avoid a no-deal departure from the EU.

"The EU must be licking their lips at the prospect of the United Kingdom accepting such a one-sided, imbalanced, EU-benefiting deal".

May's government does not have a majority in the House of Commons, and opposition parties - as well as many of May's own Conservatives - have already said they will not back the divorce deal that May and European Union leaders agreed on last month. "The deal achieved by the prime minister is the only one on the table that can do that".

BORIS Johnson's new haircut fuelled speculation yesterday that he is grooming himself for a challenge to Theresa May.

"As someone who cares passionately about my country and my party, I believe Jeremy Corbyn getting his hands on power is a risk we can not afford to take".

Preparations should also be stepped up for a no-deal Brexit, he said.

She was ambushed at an European Union summit in the Austrian city in September when other leaders unexpectedly declared that her Brexit proposals would not work.

Meanwhile Defence Minister Tobias Ellwood said he would back the deal - but indicated that unless it was passed quickly he might support a second referendum because the original decision to Leave may "no longer represent a reflection of current intent".

Other ministers - including Work and Pensions Secretary Amber Rudd - have suggested that a Norway-plus deal keeping the United Kingdom in the single market and a customs union could be a "plausible" alternative if Mrs May's plan is rejected.

But speaking on the BBC's The Andrew Marr Show, Barclay said the vote would take place on schedule.

The party's Brexit spokesman said: "It looks very much at the minute that it's not going to be defeat for the government, it's going to be a rout".

New elections or a conservative revolt against the government could also lead to Jeremy Corbyn's Labour Party coming to power, May warned.

The key Commons vote on Theresa May's Brexit deal will go ahead on Tuesday as planned, Brexit Secretary Stephen Barclay has said, following rumours it could be delayed while the Prime Minister makes a last-ditch attempt to renegotiate with Brussels.

One participant in the march told NHK that the prime minister won't listen to the people who chose to leave the EU. "There's still two full days of debate".

Labour is considering its options if Mrs May is defeated and would hold talks with other opposition parties about how to proceed.

"The Conservative Party - and the nation - needs a new leader".
