She stated that one out of four persons infected with HIV might not know for about two - four years.

New HIV infections among men who have sex with men and people who inject drugs are on the rise, and aren't declining among transgender people or sex workers.

Sexual health charity the Terrance Higgins Trust (THT) called for an end to the stigma faced by people living with the virus.

He said when public figures talk about their views or experiences with HIV, it "does a huge amount" to tackle the stigma associated with the virus. If people don't know their HIV statuses, we're in the dark.

"I'm also very pleased he's brought up the global context of this, the worldwide context where there is appalling levels of prejudice and abuse against HIV-positive people and against the LGBT community in many countries around the world".

On the stigma surrounding HIV, Mr Russell-Moyle added: "Of course there are low level elements of stigma in every day life, in terms of just lack of knowledge, people reacting with guttural reaction".

Osinbajo, who was represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr Boss Mustapha, promised that more funds would be committed to the treatment of HIV and AIDS. Targeting the people most susceptible to HIV risk means taking responsive actions to make it easy for the ones, who are infected but unaware of it, to get to know their status and access treatment, thus starting to work towards suppressing their viral load.

"But, we must understand that the HIV response is a public responsibility for everyone". There is a gulf between the modern reality of HIV as an entirely manageable condition and the way people perceive it.

In advance of World AIDS Day 2018, Vice President Michael Pence announced today that the United States government, through the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), will invest $100 million to address key gaps toward achieving HIV epidemic control and ensuring justice for children, including by leveraging the unique capacities and compassion of faith-based organizations and communities. HIV is no longer a killer disease.

"These reflect, HIV is rapidly increasing among the general population, the so-called safe population, which is a big threat to our generation", said Dr. Tokugha Yepthomi, senior medical consultant, Christian Institute of Health Sciences & Research (CIHSR), Dimapur.
