"Fortunately, Mo and his staff have been able to accomplish that with the acquisition of Paul Goldschmidt", team owner and chairman Bill DeWitt said. "We looked at all the different options. we really felt that Paul checked so many boxes for us that he made sense".

Goldschmidt defintely knows with or without him, St. Louis still is set up for success. Goldschmidt comes to the Cardinals from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for catcher Carson Kelly, pitcher Luke Weaver, minor league infielder Andy Young and a future draft pick.

"We've been thinking about how to improve this club since late September", Mozeliak said. And that's a welcome thought considering the Cardinals have now missed out on postseason play three years in a row.

"We couldn't find anything negative on him". Even after those meetings end a week from today, Mozeliak says they'll be practicing patience.

"This was the closest to 44 that wasn't taken".

Theresa May presses on with Brexit vote as MPs demand better deal
MPs are voting on the Prime Minister's Brexit deal in the "meaningful vote" promised in a government concession previous year . Former cabinet minister Priti Patel told The Times there was still time for Mrs May to push for "a better deal".

"I think we have a number of players who have invested quite a bit into this team", Diamondbacks Senior Vice President and General Manager Mike Hazen said. I got 44 because it was hanging in my locker. "From Jake Lamb to David Peralta, Robbie Ray, Nick Ahmed, I think we have a number of players".

The Diamondbacks in 2018 chose Goldschmidt as the team's nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award, given to the player who shows exceptional kindness and sportsmanship through Major League Baseball.

"I knew it definitely was a possibility", said Goldschmidt, who hit.297 with 209 home runs in eight seasons with the Diamondbacks. "Facing some of these pitchers were really tough and the young talent, that's just what these Cardinals do, they keep producing young talent".

"We have to take opportunities at times, as challenging as they may be, to try and infuse talent into the organization", Hazen said.

The addition of Goldschmidt allows Matt Carpenter to move to third base and bat leadoff, followed by former Cubs outfielder Dexter Fowler, Goldschmidt, left fielder Marcell Ozuna, shortstop Paul DeJong, catcher Yadier Molina, center fielder Harrison Bader and second baseman Kolten Wong.
