A rescue dog of the high mountain gendarmerie platoon of Courchevel, arriving on the spot shortly after the accident to search the area for survivors, discovered him conscious about forty minutes later.

The boy's snow coat was not equipped with an avalanche detector, ABC News reported.

Rescue workers described the operation as "miraculous" because the chances of survival are minuscule after 15 minutes under the snow.

Police explained that the boy was able to survive because his airways were not blocked by the snow, ABC News reported.

The boy suffered a broken leg and was transported to Grenoble hospital, where he was placed under observation.
