Congress passes short-term funding bill, puts shutdown showdown off until December 21

Pelosi Says There Will Be No Wall Funding in Exchange for DACA Deal

The House of Representatives and Senate passed a two-week stopgap measure Thursday afternoon, extending current levels of funding until December 21 and buying appropriators a little more time to negotiate a long-term deal.

Work on the budget and other issues was suspended this week because of former President George H.W. Bush's funeral. Funding for those agencies had been set to expire Friday at midnight.

Appropriators and leaders in both parties have said that border wall funding is pretty much the last item that remains unresolved in the seven spending bills Congress has yet to pass.

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer has so far said that the President should either agree to enact an existing Department of Homeland Security funding bill that has bipartisan support in the Senate and would allocate $1.6 billion for border security or keep DHS funded for another year via a short-term spending measure known as a continuing resolution.

She later said that she and most Democrats consider the wall "immoral, ineffective and expensive", adding that Trump repeatedly promised that Mexico would pay for it.

A group of GOP senators introduced a bill Wednesday that aims to fully fund the border wall with $25 billion.

Trump has asked for $5 billion for the wall, but congressional Democrats are reluctant to appropriate money for that endeavor.

Oil producers join forces and cut production again
In order to put an end to crude oil prices, the organization of oil producing countries has agreed to cut the oil production. Following the announcement, Brent crude, the global standard, was up $2.79 a barrel, or 4.7 percent, at $62.85.

Trump said in November that he was "firm" about wanting $5 billion in funding.

Trump has threatened to force a partial government shutdown if Congress does not give him the money he wants for the wall.

Many members of Congress attended Bush's memorial service in Washington, DC, on Wednesday, and some attended the funeral in Texas on Thursday. That discussion is likely to focus on funding for the president's border wall. "The wall request is a non-starter".

The House and the Senate each voted Thursday to pass a short-term spending bill that would keep the government running until December 21.

If the US President signs the bill, lawmakers would secure a major victory of averting the shutdown.

Trump is set to meet Tuesday at the White House with Pelosi and Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of NY.

The short-term spending bill avoided a partisan fight that had been expected this week as Washington. "It doesn't have to be just all about whacking the president on this issue", Kinzinger said. There were two brief partial government shutdowns earlier this year, one of which was resolved in a matter of hours.
