Death toll from Indonesia tsunami climbs to 43, hundreds injured: disaster agency

According to a statement from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Krakatau erupted at just after 9 p.m. and the tsunami struck at around 9.30 p.m. on Saturday.

Scientists say the tsunami could have been caused by the eruption of Anak Krakatau, a volcanic island formed over years from the nearby Krakatau volcano.

"The combination caused a sudden tsunami that hit the coast", Nugroho had said, but added that Indonesia's geological agency was working to ascertain exactly how it happened.

Emergency officials are now investigating whether the tsunami was caused by Krakatoa, a volcanic island in the Sunda Strait.

"The tsunami hit several areas of the Sunda Strait, including beaches in Pandeglang regency, Serang, and South Lampung", the agency said.

There was initial confusion over the tsunami, with Mr Nugroho initially tweeting that the flooding was the result of extreme tides caused by the full moon.

"I had to run, as the wave passed the beach and landed 15-20m (meters) inland", Norwegian Øystein Lund Andersen wrote on Facebook.

"I am saddened to hear the news of the tsunami disaster in Banten, Indonesia which has claimed at least 20 lives".

BNPB spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said that 43 people had been killed, while 584 others were injured and two were missing after a tsunami hit beaches in Banten and Lampung.

Norwegian volcano photographer Oystein Andersen was on the beach taking photos of Krakatoa after the earlier eruptions when the waves came.

Lava streams down Krakatoa after an eruption in July.

"Managed to evacuate with my family to higher ground through forest paths and villages, where we are taken care of [by] the locals".

Indonesia, one of the most disaster-prone nations on earth, straddles the so-called Pacific "Ring of Fire", where tectonic plates collide and a large portion of the world's volcanic eruptions and earthquakes occur.
