Only a month before the Cambridge Analytica scandal surfaced, Facebook's head of HR, Janelle Gale, shared the secrets of its success in Glassdoor's ranking, highlighting that employees are told from day one that they should own and contribute to company culture. Glassdoor publishes job listings and also has a separate "employer brand" service where employers tout their company on a website that sits on Glassdoor alongside any reviews.

On Wednesday, Glassdoor released its annual list of the top companies to work for, drawing from millions of employee reviews for more than 800,000 companies. An In-N-Out database administrator said, "They offer great training and have a great support structure", while a software engineer at Procore reported opportunities for career growth.

The firm ranked second on last year's list.

While Facebook was the best place to work in America past year, Cupertino-based tech giant Apple had tumbled to number 84 in 2017 from its 36th position in 2016. The top tech company in the list is little-known Zoom Video Communications at No 2.

The company, although headquartered in Boston, has more than 90 locations in 50 countries.

Remarkably, it seems SpaceX may still be able to recover the rocket. "Appears to be undamaged and is transmitting data". A SpaceX Falcon 9 makes a splashdown after having problems approaching its planned landing zone.

Hit by users' data scandals amid falling stocks this year, Facebook has lost the tag of best place to work in the U.S. while Apple has moved up in the list of top-rated employers. It rose a number of spots from last year's ranking of 21.

The drop in Facebook's ranking comes after a rocky year for the company. In a statement reported by the Journal, the company said "it has been a hard period, but every day we see people pulling together to learn the lessons of the past year and build a stronger company". Google was 8th while Salesforce came 11th. LinkedIn (No. 6), Lululemon (No. 9) and Southwest Airlines (No. 10) completed the top 10. The search giant's ranking is also down from fifth place in 2018.

Google's overall rating fell from 4.6 to 4.4 over the year, with it too facing a year of unrest among employees, including worker protests over its work on the Pentagon's AI Project Maven and the global walkout over its handling of sexual harassment by top executives.

Still, Mr Chamberlain said that the response of Facebook workers to a question about their business outlook had declined from 89 per cent who'd written positives reviews last year to 82 per cent this year. Reviews are submitted by current and former employees. And even if companies launch internal campaigns to get employees to fill out reviews, he says that won't stop the people who aren't happy from complaining.

The New Year is usually the mark of a new start for most people.
