The 21-year-old has proven one of the most astute signings of the Fenway Sports Group era, moving to Liverpool from Charlton Athletic for just £3.5 million in the summer of 2015.

The 18-year-old centre-half is touted as a big prospect, having made the step-up to the first team from the French club's academy this season. For me, you can play fair, but you can also play hard.

He joins Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Jordan Henderson in penning new deals on Merseyside in recent months.

Gomez has won six England caps, but was ruled out of Gareth Southgate's squad for the World Cup because of injury.

Theresa May fights on to save her Brexit deal as critics circle
Guy Verhofstadt, the European Parliament's Brexit representative, tweeted: "I can't follow any more". If that happens she can not be challenged for at least another year.

Given Gomez's growing reputation, it could have been a concern that a top side on the continent could have developed an interest, but signing a six-year deal suggests he's not looking to move on any time soon.

"It's really nice news that makes a lot of sense to everyone involved", Klopp told Liverpool FC's website. I have learned so much. I don't see the problem. Already this season we have seen him mature on the pitch and the credit for that goes 100 per cent to Joe himself for the attitude he has. He is so humble, so grounded, that it is a pleasure for me, my staff and the other players to work with him every day at Melwood.

"Tackles are part of the game, that's how we play and we're not going to change for someone saying we shouldn't tackle".

The Dutch defender hailed the importance of Liverpool's home support ahead of the do-or-die meeting with SSC Napoli, and looked back on past wins against Roma and Manchester City as evidence that Tuesday night's clash could be something special. We are the ideal environment for him to achieve his full potential and he makes our team and squad stronger. He soaks up the experience, while at the same time finding his own path.
