The 42-year-old also hinted that the 2019 Australian Open could be without many big-name US players due to its clash with the Hero World Challenge, which will be played the week prior to the biennial teams' event next December.

However a scheduling clash in 2019 means Tiger's own tournament, the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas, will also be played in the week prior to the Presidents Cup, in the same timeslot as the Australian Open.

The former long-time World No.1, who has played in eight Presidents Cups and won the most matches (24) of all time, then reinforced his desire to become the first playing captain since three-time major victor Hale Irwin (1994).

Woods said he had several meetings scheduled while in Melbourne to discuss the logistics of travel ahead of the 2019 Presidents Cup and while he hoped to attract the strongest field possible to his Hero tournament, he was also determined to ensure his team was well prepared.

Woods indicated that no announcement would be made on the outcome of the talks until he returned to the U.S.

"If I'm not (a qualifier), it's up to myself, the vice captains and the players (to determine) who we round out the team with", Woods said.

"We'll see what happens as we have to figure some of the logistical things between now and then and that's one of the reasons I'm here", said Woods.

NBA's Kay Felder Arrested for Assault, Allegedly Choked Woman
Felder, a Detroit native, appeared in 11 games with Raptors 905 and averaged 18.1 points per game. After being waived by the Raptors in October, Felder remained with the franchise's G-League team.

Woods said the experience of 1998 at Royal Melbourne, when he was part of the only USA team to lose to the Internationals, illustrated how important it was that the Americans were ready to go.

With his resurgence as a player he is now likely to play at Royal Melbourne next year, although to qualify he needs to be in the top eight on the US PGA Tour's points listing at the end of the 2018-19 season. You know, we could have a different core of guys. If not, they'll stay competitive, stay sharp. He shares the record of 24 wins with Phil Mickelson and had a 2-3 record in 1998 and again in 2011 at Royal Melbourne. "Hopefully I'm part of the top eight".

Woods spent part of Wednesday running a junior clinic and paid a visit to Royal Melbourne which unsurprisingly, he found nearly exactly the same as it was when he most recently competed in Melbourne in 2011.

Only Hale Irwin has played the Presidents Cup as a captain when he performed dual roles for the the inaugural 1994 event.

"I wanted to play against him", Woods recalled of his battle with Norman at a packed media conference at Melbourne's Southbank boulevard, a stone's throw from the famous Yarra River which flows through the city. "Jim (Furyk) thought my role was better being focused on playing".

"I had a lot of prep about being a vice-captain and being a player, and I was part of a lot of those conversations about who should be part of the team, all the group texts that we were trying to figure out", he said.

Woods said he didn't think Royal Melbourne had changed much in the seven years since he last visited Australia. "It's one of the most unique courses you can play; it's so short, so fast and so tricky".
