Google Play Services no longer supports Android 4.0

The lowest version of Android that new and existing apps need to target is Jelly Bean and Kitkat.

Google announced that it had chose to abandon further support all electronic devices running on Android operating system 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

Although no longer supported, apps that require it can still be forked into a "pre" and "post" entries on the Play Store, and the last supported version will remain available to ICS toteing customers.

New 'Far Cry New Dawn' Gameplay Revealed
Left unattended, the Highwaymen will retake them and increase security, upping the difficulty each time you come a-knockin'. The game releases in a little over two months, so I'm sure Ubisoft will drop some in-game footage soon enough.

These monthly updates normally fix potential vulnerabilities for devices running Android 9, but this month's update has specific patches for Pixel phones in addition to the normal security updates.

Google recommends Android developers target API level 16 as the minimum supported level. But if your app still does have a large number of users on older devices, you can build multiple APKs to support those devices, the post said. Recently, Google has revealed that it has removed 22 malicious apps from the Google Play store. The bright side here is that it's more likely that those devices running the aging version of Android aren't actually active and being used as a daily driver. It's unclear how many developers will take the company up on that idea due to the relatively small market share for Android 4.0 devices. And it follows other recent episodes of this same kind of discovery, such as the one we told you about recently that involved Google pulling 13 apps that install malware on user devices and had been downloaded over 500,000 times.

The decision to close down API Levels 14 and 15 to Google Play has other consequences too - it means that Google Play Services will remain forever encased in amber at version 14.7.99, meaning that any new functionality that depends on it will not work. In fact Nexus was the first device to ship with Android 4.0 with Google later rolling it out to Nexus S on the same day. It came with an overhauled interface which included new gestures, new widgets and virtual buttons on the System Bar.
