Instagram gets rid of scrolling - by accident

Instagram releases major update to feed, users trash it on Twitter and the update disappears

Many users compared the change to Snapchat's unpopular redesign, which rolled out past year and was widely criticised for being too confusing. A screen saying: "Introducing a New Way to Move Through Posts", appears, telling users to tap through to see the posts in their timeline.

Annoying and confusing as it may be, the "bug", which made Instagram feed posts look and feel more like Story posts, underscores an important point: Facebook is preparing for a future where Stories are more important than feeds. "But given how angry the responses were, it might now think twice unless the data show the change makes people spend a lot more time in the app".

Mosseri replied to another tweet, adding, "Just a test that went to a few orders of magnitude more people than intended... sorry about that". Instead of this, Instagram is testing a horizontal feed, with posts - and advertisements - taking up what is essentially their own page in an Instagram Story.

The following video shows how the tap-to-advance in the feed worked on Instagram.

Facebook has subsequently gone on record to say that the update wasn't meant to be rolled out globally to all Instagram users.

If successful, it would mark Congo's first democratic transition after decades marked by authoritarian rule, coups and civil war. Three of those from the latter group reportedly have returned to the facility and officials are trying to track down the rest.

Were you one of the fortunate/unfortunate users who managed to be using Instagram when the change took place?

Youtuber Elle Mills joked that the change likened Instagram to the popular dating app Tinder, which asks users to swipe left and right based on interest. "We apologize for any confusion", the company said, reported the publication. "I'm not trying to swipe photos @instagram can I have the old layout back?" tweeted user @j_mallari.

- (@MattNavarra) December 27, 2018I have the new Instagram horizontal scroll interface. There is no option in the settings part of the app to change the feed back to the original one either.

Users even floated the idea of starting a petition to get the feed back to normal.
