But Spurs confirmed on Thursday that Son will miss his nation's matches against the Philippines and Kyrgyzstan before linking up with his worldwide team-mates for their last Group C game against China.

Why is Son set to miss Spurs matches in January?

The 26-year-old will meet up with the South Korea squad after the clash against Manchester United on January 13.

The Asian Cup isn't to be confused with the Asian Games - at which Son won gold earlier this year, exempting him from military service.

The 24-nation Asian Cup is the continent's most glamorous football tournament and will hold from January 5 to February 1.

It will be the second time this season when Son will be absent for a lengthy period of time due to worldwide commitments after he missed three of Spurs' opening four games of the season to compete in the Asian Games.

Tottenham announced Son's call-up on Thursday morning via social media.

While losing Son at a pivotal time in the season will undoubtedly be a blow to Mauricio Pochettino, Spurs have negotiated a deal with the South Korean FA that will see Son join the squad later than his teammates.

He made a slow start to the current campaign as a result of his participation at the Asian Games.

The talented forward netted Spurs' opening goal in their quarter-final victory over Arsenal on Wednesday night and was a constant menace throughout.

Among the Europe-based contingent, Son Heung-min was named in the squad, but will be unable to play the first two games under an agreement reached between his club Tottenham Hotspur and the Korea Football Association (KFA).
