However, league sources indicated that numerous teams remain in contact with the running back as he undergoes counseling and awaits discipline for shoving and kicking a woman outside his Cleveland residence in February. The NFL often uses its "Exempt List" like a detainment center, while they figure out an appropriate plan and punishment for the proclaimed offender.

Instead, Hunt gave his perspective on why the Chiefs swiftly released Kareem Hunt after TMZ Sports posted a video of Hunt, then 22, shoving and kicking a 19-year-old woman in a hallway of a downtown Cleveland hotel on the morning of February 10.

"The most important thing is that he gets some counseling that can help him with his issues", Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt said Sunday, his first public comments since the video surfaced.

Kareem Hunt addressed the incident in an interview with ESPN on December 2, saying he was "in the wrong" and that he would tell the woman in the video that he is "sorry for my actions that night".

The Chiefs were aware of Kareem Hunt's three violent episodes in a six-month span before his release, team CEO Clark Hunt said Sunday afternoon.

The NFL has come under intense scrutiny for its handling of the Kareem Hunt case, especially after pouring resources into establishing a department to handle such investigations.

The Steelers failed to force overtime against the Raiders in Oakland on Sunday. Quarterback Josh Dobbs took Roethlisberger's place to start the second half.

The Chiefs have taken chances on other players with character concerns and for the most part they have worked out.

"I'm not sure I'm at a point where I can say there was a breakdown (in the NFL's investigation) and specifically what that breakdown was", Clark Hunt said. "There are limitations on the type of information that league security people are able to get, and I'm not sure that we can change that".

Hunt was among the NFL's leading rushers again this season when he was released, and the decision was a significant blow to a team with Super Bowl aspirations.

Hunt, 23, was released by the Chiefs shortly after video emerged of the incident a week ago and remains a free agent.

"So we're certainly going to try to get better, but I don't think you can ever be ideal in that regard".

"I hope to move on from this". Our message to him was, 'Even though we're having to part ways with you today, we're still supportive of you.
