Lakers eyeing Trevor Ariza in trade talks with Suns

Ariza x LeBron

The Los Angeles Lakers are attempting to acquire Phoenix Suns forward Trevor Ariza, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported on Sunday.

The identity of the third team is unknown, but Wojnarowski's report indicates that the Lakers are looking to send Kentavious Caldwell-Pope to the third team.

The Phoenix Suns could very well make a trade with their rivals, the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Suns, meanwhile, are seeking a guard and a draft pick in exchange for Ariza.

Caldwell-Pope, 25, has veto powers on any trade, but the report indicates the Lakers have shown a willingness to work with his agent, Rich Paul, if there is a deal available to increase his minutes and possibly help him land a deal with a new team this summer.

No trade can be completed officially until Saturday, when players like Ariza, who were signed in summer free agency, become eligible to be traded.

In 24 appearances with the Suns this season, Ariza is averaging 9.7 points. He is now averaging 8.5 points in 21.5 minutes per game and signed a one-year, $12 million deal to return to Los Angeles over the summer.

Ariza is also signed to a one-year deal, a $15 million pact he signed after five seasons in Houston.

Caldwell-Pope has only played 21.5 minutes per game this season, averaging 8.5 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 1.3 three-pointers per game on 38.6 percent shooting from the field and 34 percent from beyond the arc.

The Suns are a league-worst 4-22 this season.

Ariza's expiring contract would allow the Lakers to keep salary-cap flexibility into summer free agency.

There seem to be two major reasons for Los Angeles bringing in Ariza.
