Stanislaus County Sheriff Adam Christianson said that Arriaga crossed the USA border in Arizona illegally "some time ago" and that he has two prior arrests for driving under the influence. Authorities also made sure to point out that Singh immigrated legally from his native Fiji.

At the news conference Friday, Christianson had strong words about immigration and border security.

During Thursday's press conference, Newman Police Chief Randy Richardson tearfully said, "You have to understand this was not supposed to happen here".

Officers found Singh who had been shot, and he was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Singh was shot just before 1 a.m. Wednesday, a few minutes after radioing in that he was pulling over a gray pickup truck that had no license plate in Newman, a town of about 10,000 people some 85 miles east of San Jose. "Don't forget the other things, the little things that are oftentimes forgotten in these stories".
