Marriott hack blamed on China

Marriott data breach linked to China hackers, Reuters reports

Canadians have started receiving emails from Marriott International, informing them of a recent breach of customers' personal data held by their Starwood hotel properties.

The Chinese government is suspected to be behind the hack of the hotel owner Marriott International Inc., that included the theft of data relating to over 500 million customers worldwide.

Let's refresh on how bad the hack disclosed just last week ago really was.

Unnamed investigators on the Marriott data breach have stated that tools, techniques, and procedures used in the attack have been used in the past by Chinese hackers.

Private investigators hired by the company have discovered signs similar to previous hacks blamed on Chinese intelligence. The sources were not authorized the discuss the probe but speaking on the condition of anonymity, shared that the campaign may have been conducted by Chinese intelligence as a part of espionage efforts rather than for financial gain.

It might not be China: Sources for the article "cautioned it was possible somebody else was behind the hack because other parties had access to the same hacking tools, some of which have previously been posted online".

Ukip supporters started their procession at the Dorchester Hotel and followed a specified route to the Houses of Parliament. Scotland Yard has imposed restrictions for the central London marches and urged people to protest peacefully.

Both Chinese Embassy in Washington and Marriott spokesperson have declined to comment on the matter.

The company on Friday confirmed to The Register that customers who fall victim to fraud as a result of forged passports will be eligible to claim a replacement passport at Marriott's expense.

Another reason for suspicion of China is that the timing of the initial breach in 2014 was right around the time, according to United States intelligence, that the country's operatives began poking around in the systems of the Office of Personnel Management. Therefore, the hotel group must invest heavily in improved cybersecurity to protect its customers from cyber attacks. The company said it will pay for a web-monitoring service, and will also cover the cost of replacing passports.

China strongly denied the report. "It's all very long range", said Anderson, who was not involved in investigating the Marriott case and is now a principal with Chertoff Group.

Michael Sussmann, a former senior computer crimes specialist for the Department of Justice, told Reuters, "Patience is a virtue for spies, but not for criminals trying to steal credit card numbers".
