Robinson gave an interview on BBC's Radio 4, following her visit on December 15, to Dubai, to meet with the daughter (Latifa) of the Ruler of Dubai, HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

"Mrs. Robinson fails to address this point at all".

Accounts by people involved in Latifa's escape attempt said that she fled first to Oman, before boarding a yacht which was surrounded by the Indian navy and then towed back to the UAE.

Mrs Robinson had been criticised for "reciting" the lines put out by the UAE. Kenneth Roth, executive director of Human Rights Watch, asked on Twitter.

She said that Latifa is a "troubled young woman" receiving care, as she's suffering from a serious medical condition.

He continued: "I'm not sure that Mary Robinson, during such a short visit, would be capable of discerning the difference".

She also alleged she had been confined for three years and tortured.

"Robinson's recent meeting with Latifa in Dubai serves only to act as proof of life but in no way satisfies us that indeed Latifa is safe", Radha Stirling, head of the group Detained in Dubai, told Euronews.

"A young woman, one who made the most serious of allegations against her own family, so serious that she felt that she had no other option but to organise a covert escape out of the country, has not been heard from or seen for a period of 9-months after being detained on a boat near the coast of India", the organisation added. "Either I'm dead or I'm in a very, very, very bad situation", Sheikha Latifa said in the recording.

Instead, he said, there has been no explanation about why a yacht was boarded by armed forces in global waters, why people on the boat were imprisoned and tortured or why Latifa is still prevented from speaking publicly.

In a YouTube video at the time, she said she was leaving because of restrictions imposed on her by her family.

Ebola patients abscond from treatment center in Congo
If successful, it would mark Congo's first democratic transition after decades marked by authoritarian rule, coups and civil war. Three of those from the latter group reportedly have returned to the facility and officials are trying to track down the rest.

"And the dilemma was that Latifa is vulnerable, she's troubled".

"It's under circumstances that I think need to be examined".

However, in a statement issued this morning, Mrs Robinson said: "I am dismayed at some of the media comments on my visit".

They told Sky News: "Sheikha Latifa has undoubtedly been through a traumatic experience of being abducted and returned to the UAE".

She added: "I had lunch with her".

"Mrs Robinson appears to have spent a couple of hours with Sheikha Latifa and despite having no formal medical or psychiatric training, has somehow diagnosed her condition and concluded that she is receiving appropriate treatment", he said.

Former president Mary Robinson has defended her comments about a meeting she had with a princess who tried to flee the United Arab Emirates earlier this year and was feared missing. She wasn't with her wider family.

The UAE said the photos were taken on 15 December, some three weeks after it was reported that Mrs Robinson was quitting a high-profile event in Dubai in protest over the jailing of British academic Matthew Hedges.

Toby Cadman, a lawyer at the London-based Guernica 37 International Justice Chambers which represents Latifa on the instruction of Detained in Dubai, questioned Robinson's qualifications to assess the princess.

They said: "No explanation has been provided as to why Sheikha Latifa has been hidden from view for nine months, and even now, is prevented from speaking to anyone".
