The move on Thursday by Indonesia's air-traffic control agency AirNav came as the volcanic island located in the Sunda Strait between the islands of Java and Sumatra continued spewing columns of ash into the air.

Indonesia is part of a collection of more than 17,000 islands that sit on the geologically-active land referred to by scientists as the "Ring of Fire", and is often hit by earthquakes and tsunamis.

The tsunami hit at 9:27 p.m. Jakarta time (1427 GMT) on Saturday, after the eruption of the Anak Krakatau volcano sparked underwater landslides, leading to the rise of the sea level.

In September, more than 2,000 people were killed after a tsunami and quake struck western Sulawesi, with many complaining they were caught unawares.

A crater collapse on Anak Krakatoa at high tide on Saturday night is thought to have sent waves smashing into the Indonesian shoreline, engulfing fishing villages and popular resorts along the coasts of western Java and south Sumatra.

Heavy rains and high seas have hampered search efforts -- some of the dead have been found at sea.

Sunday's disaster struck without warning, surprising people in a country that regularly suffers landslides, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

"I've lost everything I have, my house and all belongings inside it", said farmer Muhamad Sarta.

Anak Krakatau, which means child of Krakatau, is the offspring of the infamous Krakatau volcano that affected global climate with a massive eruption in 1883.

The country's system of tsunami detection buoys - deployed after the 2004 disaster - has not worked since 2012, with some units being stolen or vandalized.

The danger zone around the rumbling volcano was expanded to 5 km from the 2-km radius since Mt. Anak Krakatau increased its activity in July.

"There is a danger of more eruptions", said national disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho.

BMKG said late on Tuesday the rough weather around the volcano could make its crater more fragile. "That's why we are in coordination with other agencies such as the maritime and geology agencies", she said. "We nearly could not breathe and I nearly gave up when I groped the key in the water and managed to open the door, and the water began to recede".

A satellite image shows that during the eruption on Dec 22, most of the flank areas at the southwest of the volcano have collapsed just before the tsunami.

The disaster agency slightly raised the death toll Wednesday to 430, with 1,495 people injured and another 159 missing. Almost 20,000 people have been displaced by the tsunami and almost 1,500 injured, according to Reuters.
