Detective Inspector Scott Beard said police had gathered evidence on Saturday that had "established this is a homicide".

Fighting back tears, he told a press conference: "Grace is a lovely, outgoing, fun-loving, family-orientated daughter".

She graduated from the University of Lincoln in September and had embarked on a year-long worldwide trip.

Her birthday was on Sunday but she didn't contact her family.

She failed to check in with family, which is very out of character for her, they say.

Her father David Millane fronted a press conference at Auckland Central Police Station on Friday after flying to New Zealand from Essex.

Inspector Beard said that, along with information provided by the 26-year-old, CCTV footage and a "scene examination" indicated Ms Millane was dead.

A 26-year-old man is now being held in connection with the murder, Det Insp Beard added.

"You know, that property is going to be somewhere".

"As a family we have been extremely concerned for her welfare", he said.

Her passport is also missing.

CCTV footage captured Millane leaving Andy's Burgers & Bar, on the first level of Sky City, at 7.15pm last Saturday, December 1.

The last confirmed sighting of Millane was at the CityLife Hotel, in Queen St, at 9.41pm on Saturday.

‘Dauntless’ Confirmed For Consoles, Coming In 2019
Following the announcement and trailer for Dauntless at The Game Awards 2018, some fresh details have landed. It will also be coming to Epic Games' newly announced storefront for those still looking to play on PC.

Earlier today, police investigating the disappearance of English tourist Grace Millane released photographs of jewellery that is missing from the backpackers where she was staying.

Police had "no reason or understanding what the motive was", he said.

"Grace is a lovely, outgoing, fun-loving, family-oriented daughter", he said, adding that she was usually in touch with her family every day.

"We don't know what's happened to the property of hers that has been missing", he said.

'Several of her belongings, including her passport, are missing and police believe it is likely Grace has these items with her'.

The man was with her on Saturday evening, but Beard didn't know if the pair knew each other before then.

Today's news has been greeted with an outpouring of grief on social media.

This was her first time travelling overseas alone.

The trust was set up by family of a British woman who disappeared and was later found dead in Tokyo, and supports families of Brits in crisis overseas.

'Finally I would like to take this opportunity to appeal to anybody who has seen, spoken to or come into contact with Grace over the last few days to come forward with any detail no matter how small and contact the investigation team'.

"Everybody who is a parent out there will understand what their family is going through".
