Leafs' Auston Matthews to captain Atlantic team at NHL All-Star Game

This will be the second All-Star Game appearance for Matthews, the third for both MacKinnon and McDavid, and the seventh for Ovechkin.

Fans elected the four players in during the December 1-23 voting period.

Colorado Avalanche centre Nathan MacKinnon (Central) and Washington Capitals winger Alex Ovechkin (Metropolitan) won fan votes to earn the captaincies and the first-roster spots for the January 25-26 event.

Matthews has made the All-Star Game in all three seasons he has played.

The Toronto Maple Leafs center will lead the Atlantic Division in the January 26 event in San Jose. Ovechkin has played in seven prior All-Star Games (2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2015, 2017 and 2018) and will captain the Metropolitan Division for the second straight year. It's worth nothing that it's a particularly young group of leaders this year; Ovechkin, 33, is the only representative over the age of 23.

While fans got to choose the four captains for each team, the league's hockey operations department will select most of the remaining 40 players (10 from each division) for the game, as usual.

The format will follow last season's with a four-team, 3-on-3 single elimination tournament.
