Mom and pop businesses that sell fresh Christmas trees on Long Island say their bottom lines are being hit hard by big retail chains. According to the council, the availability of real Christmas trees is down 40-50 per cent, but there is no shortage in Halifax. "Are we gonna pay more money?'" said Levi Jecker, who's sold trees his whole life with his family. He blames the 2008 recession for higher prices this season, especially for the short supply of taller trees he's experiencing. "So the trees that had the frost will grow out of it, so in another year or two, those trees will be cut and shipped they won't even know they had frost on them". Wilk says his prices are up 20 percent.

Although rare, when a Christmas tree fire does occur one of 32 reported home Christmas tree fires results in a death compared to an average of one death per 143 total reported home fires.

It then makes the price more expensive for customers too.

Hebb says the Nauglers ship most of their trees out of the country and the freeze did not affect them. Are we not gonna sell trees? An eight-footer is $70. "The smell, I want the fragrance where you wake up in the morning".

The Jeckers expect it will still be tough to get a tree for the next four to five years.
