Bahrain attacks Qatar’s Emir for boycotting Gulf Arab Summit

Saudi Arabia's King Salman has invited Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani to attend the upcoming Gulf Cooperation Summit set to take place in Riyadh on December 9, the official Qatar News Agency reported.

Last year, a two-day GCC summit ended within hours of its start in Kuwait without any progress being made on the Qatar diplomatic row.

Saudi Arabia's king invited Qatar's ruler to attend a regional summit in Riyadh this month in a sign of a potential thaw between the nations as the Saudis struggle to overcome worldwide condemnation for the killing of columnist Jamal Khashoggi and its conduct in the Yemen war.

Al Jarallah said the summit could present a "hope to resolve the Gulf crisis and solve the differences".

The tweet did not say if the emir would travel to the Kingdom.

Such a move would have led to further tariffs on imports from the U.S.to China and vice-versa. He had earlier also indicated that the deadline for an agreement could be extended.

On June 5, 2017, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, and Egypt all cut off diplomatic ties with Qatar after alleged accusation of "funding terrorism and for having a too-close relation with Iran". Doha denies the charge.

Doha is one of OPEC's smallest oil producers but the world's biggest liquefied natural gas (LNG) exporter and its exit from the oil cartel has deepened the sense among analysts that any prospect for a near-term resolution to the Gulf row was unlikely to come at the summit in Riyadh.

Saudi Arabia and the UAE have repeatedly said that the dispute was not a high priority for them, and Qatar's foreign minister said last month he saw no thaw.

The 39th GCC summit is scheduled to be held in Saudi Arabian capital Riyadh. The country's permanent representative to the Arab League headed its delegation instead.

The United States, a GCC ally, has also tried to mediate in the Gulf dispute, which it sees as a risk in its efforts to contain regional power Iran.
