Russian media regulator to investigate BBC's operations

A man talks on a mobile phone inside the BBC headquarters in London, Britain, Nov. 21, 2008.

In addition to the TV broadcast, the Roskomnadzor (RKN) will check the content of websites to see if it breaches the Russian regulations, the watchdog in a statement on Friday. There are a lot of questions concerning the BBC's biased coverage of events, particularly those taking place in Russian Federation and Syria, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

Russia's broadcasting watchdog on Friday said it was probing the BBC in retaliation after a British regulator said Kremlin-funded RT television broke broadcasting standards.

The Tass news agency reported that Roskomnadzor was now mounting an inquiry to establish whether BBC content available in Russian Federation complied with the law there.

On December 20, British media regulator Ofcom said RT had broken impartiality rules in seven programs in the spring of 2018 and added that it was considering imposing a statutory sanction.

The programmes were mostly about the poisoning of Russian ex-spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter in Salisbury in March or the conflict in Syria.

Police said politicans and other officials had been traveling nearby on what is a business day in the Horn of Africa nation. The al-Qaida-linked extremist group al-Shabaab took responsibility for the attack on pro-insurgent radio station Andalus.

"Many have questions for the BBC regarding its biased coverage of some events, as they are covered not like a media outlet should do but in a preprogrammed and biased way", Peskov said.

Britain has accused agents working for Russia's military intelligence agency, the GRU, of committing the crime, an allegation Moscow denies.

RT rejected the findings and claimed that Ofcom had failed to pay "due regards" to its rights and ignored its explanations.

She said it would take "a microscope" to find dissenting points of view on BBC news.

Russian Federation has regularly threatened retaliatory actions against British media if the operations of its state news agencies such as RT are impeded in the UK.
